We combine direct observation with physical and mathematical analyses in an interdisciplinary, international environment.

Research Themes

We develop cutting-edge imaging technologies from single-molecule observation to in vivo imaging, focusing on high-resolution optical microscopy and fluorescent protein probes. We advance computational analysis through machine learning and AI for microscopic image processing. Our biological applications investigate cellular processes including intracellular transport, vesicle trafficking, and cytoskeletal dynamics, aiming to understand molecular mechanisms through direct observation.

Laboratory Locations

Our laboratory is divided between two locations: RIKEN Center for Biosystems Dynamics Research (BDR) in Kobe and the University of Tokyo in Tokyo. RIKEN BDR is a research institute focused on developmental and regenerative biology. At the University of Tokyo, we are affiliated with the Department of Cell Biology at the Graduate School of Medicine and the Department of Physics at the Graduate School of Science, among others. Our laboratory brings together members from a wide range of fields, from medical biology to physics, working collaboratively in a single research group.

Official Websites of Our Affiliations

RIKEN BDR lab page

Official page at Univ Tokyo

Official page at Department of Physics, Univ Tokyo

Universal Biology Institute (UBI)

International Research Center for Neurointelligence (IRCN)

Other sites

Researchmap

ResearchGate

Understanding the inner life of the cell by imaging Laboratory Overview Our laboratory unites researchers from diverse backgrounds to address fundamental biological questions through live-cell imaging.
